Swimming Remotes with Duane at SportingImages…

Monday, April 20th, 2009

I had a great week last week with Duane, Lucas and Matt from Sporting Images.Duane has a great attitude towards trying remotes and he let me give some shots a go.

The first shot we tried was from the under-pool port holes. I’d never been down under the Sydney Olympic Aquatic Center, so this was a great thrill.

This shot was not without it’s problems. My camera (1DMK2N) worked ok, but had to shoot at a challenging ISO3200. Duane’s amazing 5DMK2 was shooting at ISO6400 and the shots were amazingly clear, however, I couldn’t stop that set-up from falling asleep after a few minutes. My remote cables are home made and I hadn’t tried them on a 5D MK2, so they were likely the problem.

The second shot was a high shot of the starting blocks. It was a 1DMK2N at ISO3200 in TV Mode at 1/400th Second. The shot is part of an image montage product that Sporting Imagessell. This shot worked well……when I had it focussed correctly (I’ll get to that issue in a later post).

Australian Swimming Championships Over…

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

Well……the swimming is finally over. We didn’t hang around for the team announcement, just got the 1500m and RAN!!!!

Must admit, I was getting a little over the repetitive nature of this shooting. It was great to be at the event, and I really loved it, but I did 5 nights out of 8 and it was getting to me. I guess having to still go to work each day didn’t help. I ‘ve got a week off to regroup and get ready for Ironman. I’m looking forward to that because I get to do remote cameras and shoot some different stuff. I guess the fact that I don’t have to edit the IM makes it better. Post Processing (PP) is the most time consuming process from my point of view. It takes just as long as the event itself and is soooooo repetitive.

Pool Deck Access With The Yellow Vest…

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

At the events like the swimming, there’s not too much chance for me to get onto the pool desk. Only the top tier Media (Papers, Getty etc…) get the yellow vests. That is until last night. I was lucky enough to see a spare vest in the media room as asked the event organisers if I could “borrow” it for the night.

Vested Media

Sure Enough I’m on the pool deck and able to get front-on shots from ground level. Nice one!!!

Australian Swimming Championships…

Monday, March 24th, 2008

Off to the swimming over the next few nights. some good experience. Check out my Galleryor SMPImages site :

22nd March 2008/ 25th March 2008/ 26th March 2008

28th March 2008/ 29th March 2008

Murray and I have been limited in where we can shoot as the Tier-1 Media are the only ones with pool desk access. We are stuck in temporary stands near the starting blocks. Not too bad though, we can get some ok shots from there.

Still having problems with the MK3 focussing. Keepers are 5% – 10%, and the main problem seems to be focussing on the water in front of the swimmers. I have the AF points locked down to the centre only with no expansion etc… but still having problems. Must admit, that when the shots are in focus, they are pin-sharp….just not that manu of them.

Arranges access to the catwalk over the pool to see about overhead shots. Basically no good with high rails and a massive safety cage under the catwalk preventing any sight of the pool at all. Nice to see wht it looks like though.
