Scody Advertising Shoot….

Friday, November 14th, 2008

It was a blast to spend the day with some of Australia’s best Triathletes. Normally I watch them wizz past me on the course!! The shoot was by FusePhotography and Christian Blanchard was directing the action. I was the #2 shooter getting different angles and candid shots.

The constant heavy showers made the day quite a bit harder. I’ve never been keen on letting my cameras get wet….perhaps I’m a big sook, but these stuff is not cheep so I look after it. Rain covers, plastic bags and the good-old postie elastic band kept everything dry.

I’m pretty happy with the results. I used the ST-E2 and a remote flash (Camera left). Next time I’ll use a 580-Master on the camera with a 580-Slave off-camera for fill. Many of the shots were not clearly lit and given the brand is all important, basic front lighting is kinda important. Everything fixed up ok in post processing, but I’d prefer to get it right on-camera where possible. Given the gloomy day we used 1/2 CTO warming gels on the flashes and set the WB to cloudy. This warmed up the “models” nicely.

I’m looking forward to see the final results. I’ll start stalking Scody shops to see if my shots made the swing-tags etc… Sad I know.

Ironman Videos

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

I’ve put some videos together from the Ironman weekend. Still new to Video so please excuse the shots and editing.

I spent quite a bit of time getting my gear ready for Ironman. I like to be prepared. Check the video for the gear list

The Day before…

Saturday, April 5th, 2008

Tomorrow is the Ironman Triathlon in Port Macquarie. Athletes are checking-in bikes and getting ready; and we are using the entire regions allocation of electricity to charge 1 million batteries. There is barely a square centimeter of floor space free from cameras, lenses, chargers, wet weather gear….it’s like a war zone.

I’m hoping my day is less hectic than last year. I am mostly in the Ironman Village for the swim finish, bike finish, then the race finish. Should be a good day and I should be able to see some mates cross the line.

I shot the Carbo night last night and I still struggle with that sort of editorial work. I feel like everyone is looking at me and I have to blend in rather than do my work. I really admire photographers of can get excellent photos and not piss everyone off. If I get a moment with James, I’ll have a chat to him. I see that part of my photography as the most in need of improvement. Shooting sports is ok, but shooting crowds of people or events etc is really scary.

Aaaanyway. Must get back to cleaning and charging. Will check back on Monday if I have time.

Ironman preperation

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

I find when I go off to big events I over pack (galore). Having said that, I’ve never been caught without anything and it’s me people come to for more gear. Ironman for me is the main event of the year when it comes to logistics. Cameras have to be in good nick with plenty of batteries, lenses and other gear, but you are also out there for 14 hours so you need to have your gear all together (Chairs, Rain gear, food, water etc….).

I am hoping we can do some different stuff this year. James has mentioned another remote from the race announcers tower and some shooting at dusk. These sound great so I’ve been typically over-thinking what’s involved. I admit, I’ll find it hard to not push for something challenging, however these also mean low keeper rates and more post frustration, so I see the balance that’s required.

Aaaah well, back to packing.

Must admit, I was getting a little over the repetitive nature of this shooting. It was great to be at the event, and I really loved it, but I did 5 nights out of 8 and it was getting to me. I guess having to still go to work each day didn’t help. I ‘ve got a week off to regroup and get ready for Ironman. I’m looking forward to that because I get to do remote cameras and shoot some different stuff. I guess the fact that I don’t have to edit the IM makes it better. Post Processing (PP) is the most time consuming process from my point of view. It takes just as long as the event itself and is soooooo repetitive.
